Students in the upper grades have been painting dot mandalas—ancient, sacred symbols of the universe. We began by designing and painting a mandala on paper. Smooth river and beach stones were washed and designs were sketched with compass and straightedge. Using a variety of homemade dotting tools and acrylic paints, students mix colors and applied their designs to the stones’ surface.
