Ashwood Waldorf School’s 12th Annual Auction & Gala

SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 2007
5-10PM

Ashwood’s 12th Annual Auction “Simple Gifts” a Success!
As guests walked into the Owls Head Transportation Museum on Saturday night they seemed awe struck by the museum’s transformation into a twinkly showcase for all of the Simple Gifts auction items! The atmosphere was magically warmed with the twinkly lights on birch trees. Our grab bag activity was the Simple Gift Tree. This was the tallest birch glowing with twinkly lights and gift bags. There were other opportunities to purchase an inexpensive item at the Simple Gift table. For $5.00 you could buy a small package of seeds with the promise that your money was not only offering you the chance to plant seeds but it also contributed to the opportunity for other children to receive the seeds of a Waldorf Education.
The food was simply outstanding. The mission of L’Acadie Catering is to provide elegant local, seasonal and organic food. They source all of the food from local farmers and fishermen. It was elegant and spectacular, a perfect compliment to the outstandingly beautiful centerpieces donated in part by, an Ashwood parent, the PCC and Season’s Downeast.
Ben Tupper’s slideshow of teachers and students brought a tear to our eye as we reflected on why we believe in this Waldorf Education and want to support it. One magical moment happened during the live auction when the faculty got up in front of the audience to hoola-hoop. There were only 2 hoola-hoops for auction but in the spontaneity of the moment Kaja started to auction off the others! Can you believe that this simple toy, that raised over $600, brought us so much joy and laughter! Wow those teachers still have it in them!
The music provided by Roundabout was the perfect compliment to the evening. It was great to see all of the parents and guests enjoying themselves on the dance floor. Some were even trying out the hoola-hoops!
We had a great turnout this year and grossed over $54,000! The success of this event is due to the support and participation of the whole community. It seemed to me that the whole community came together through this event. Whether participating with a donation of a hand-made item or the purchase of an item event night the auction touched everyone this year. This participation is a reflection of the greater mission of the Ashwood Waldorf School, that the simple things in life are the most important. Giving your child the gift of a Waldorf Education, plants the seeds for a brighter future. The funds generated at the auction then go toward tuition assistance which provides more children with the opportunity to receive a Waldorf Education. So thank you to all who all of the event night volunteers including: Carl Trapani, Joanne Mosswild, Kathryn Oliver, Hugo and Laurie Heriz Smith, Dave Morrison, Jen Martin, Barry King, Carob Arnold and Mary Barney!
The event was truly a collaboration of the auction committee members, including: Carlie Cloyd, Kim Couburn, Jen Martin, Betsy Morrell, Sasha Laurita, Anne-Laure Scoran, Kathryn Oliver and Sarah Reilly. Their commitment to the school is outstanding! They each gave of their energy, time and resources. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for their efforts. This event would not have been possible without them!
It also would not have been possible with out the help Susan Morrison who donated her time and expertise to help organize the check-in and check-out. Tim Seymour who organized the auction winners with his software and instant messaging, and Sue Conover who helped with everything event night! Sue Conover was Annie’s support for the last few weeks in the office. She was an invaluable resource event night, because of her familiarity with the items and overview of the event. Thank you to all of those who supported this amazing and spectacular event!
Sincerely,
Annie Nixon
