Introduction to First Grade

This week, Ashwood grade school teachers visited with the first-grade ready kindergarteners at our early-childhood center. The excitement of the six-year-olds was palpable. There was a feeling in the air of: “Yes! I’ve finally made it to the big leagues!”

Thus begins the happy season of welcoming ready-set-to-go children—and their parents—into our next first grade and into our community, extending our warmest welcome both to Ashwood kindergartners and first-grade-ready children throughout the Midcoast, from Waldoboro to Montville and beyond.

As we prepare to launch next year’s first grade, we want to provide plenty of opportunities for parents and grandparents to get to know Ashwood’s grade school, its teachers, and the Waldorf method.

Here’s the lineup!

  • On Wednesday, January 16, from 8:15 to 10:30 a.m., we will have our regularly scheduled, free, and open-to-the-public School Tour—with a difference: This will be the first tour of the year where visitors will have a chance to see our current First Grade class in action. We’ll also visit Class 2-3 and Class 4-5. The tour is followed by a Q&A. At Ashwood Waldorf School, 180 Park Street, Rockport. Pre-registration required.
  • On Wednesday, February 13, from 8:15 to 10:30 a.m. we will host an Introduction to First Grade, a free event for prospective parents, grandparents, and other interested community members. The morning will begin with a visit to the current First Grade, where visitors will be able to see the students and their teacher in action. Following the classroom visit, School Director, Jody Spanglet will give a hands-on demonstration lesson. The morning will conclude with a Q&A session. So, bring your questions! At Ashwood Waldorf School, 180 Park Street, Rockport. Pre-registration required.
  • If you can’t make it to the morning session, or if you have more questions, come to our Introduction to First Grade the same day, Wednesday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Belfast Free Library, 106 High Street, where we’ll offer a reprise of the demonstration lesson and Q&A. All are welcome! Pre-registration required.
